The #1 Tool I Use to Build Authentic Connection

Active Listening

This week’s issue is all about Active Listening. It’s talked about a lot, but not really practiced. It’s more than just “hearing words,” it’s about fully engaging with the speaker and their message, at the head, heart, and gut levels (we’ll cover that in another issue!).

💡 Skill Spotlight

The components of active listening are:

  1. Giving the speaker your full presence

  2. Using non-verbal cues to show engagement (e.g., eye contact)

  3. Repeating what you’ve heard to ensure understanding

  4. Withholding any “solutioning” (e.g., judgment or advice) unless requested

By practicing active listening, we create a safe space for authentic communication and foster deeper connections.

🏃🏾‍♂️Try This

This upcoming week, pick a few conversations where you can practice Active Listening with the “Three-Second Rule”. 1:1s and team meetings are great for this!

tl;dr: Instead of responding immediately, pause for 3 seconds.

Are you interested in putting this into action?

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 From The Community

This is a section I want to fill with stories from you all. Please share how practicing goes for you so that the community can benefit!
