What Nobody Tells You About Transitions (But Should)

Hey everyone,

First, a celebration! The Authentic Austin community has officially grown to over 300 members. Honored to be on this journey with all of you. 🙏🏾

This post is about transition. It came up over and over again in the last meetup as a theme that linked all of us together. So much juicy stuff happens during transitions, including fear and overwhelm. Attending to ourselves during transitions can make them easier and growth-inducing. Who doesn't want that?

💫 Rounding out the March meetup

Thank you to everyone who attended March’s Conscious Connection. We continue to set records for meetup size, and March’s was no exception. 30 INCREDIBLE people showed up, and more importantly, the conversations we had were deep.

I mean really, really deep.

I coach execs and entrepreneurs and run transformation retreats for a living, so I’m used to deep conversations. I’ve been experimenting with just how deep you can get in a 2-hour group conversation without forcing any vulnerability.

Yesterday left me awestruck.

The caliber of person that showed up and the content of our conversations blew me away. There was almost no “small talk”. Instead, the theme of the night was transition. We spoke about the small and big deaths that happen in transitions, moving through fear by leaning on faith, recently deceased siblings, cancer diagnoses, near-death experiences, and the uncertain path to entrepreneurial freedom.

The energy in the room was buzzy, vibrant, grounded, connected, warm, and vulnerable. We were having conversations that usually take days or weeks of “getting to know each other” to broach. All in less than 2 hours.

💡 Skill Spotlight

tl;dr: Emotional agility is the ability to experience your emotions fully, without judgment, and to make choices that align with your values, even when you’re feeling uncomfortable. Transitions provide ample opportunity to practice emotional agility.

Emotional agility is the ability to experience your emotions fully, without judgment, and to make choices that align with your values, even when you’re feeling uncomfortable. Here's how to cultivate it during transitions:

  1. Acknowledge Your Feelings: Don't suppress or ignore your emotions. Recognize that it's normal to feel a mix of emotions during transitions. 5 minutes of journaling, meditation, or walking are great for this.

  2. Label Your Emotions: The simple act of naming your emotions can help you understand and manage them more effectively. ➡️ More on that

  3. Accept Your Emotions: Invite yourself into acceptance of your emotions, even if just for a moment. Ask yourself “Can I be with where I am at, just for now? Can I accept myself for being as [scared, reactive, angry, etc.] as I am right now?” The key here isn’t to force it. If the answer is no, honor it and notice the resistance to acceptance.

  4. Act on Your Values: Only after you feel a level of acceptance of where you’re at: Think of a choice that aligns with your core values and long-term goals.

  5. Practice Forgiveness: Be kind to yourself during transitions. Remember that you’re human and not perfect.
